I booked my room 7 months ago, and just found out yesterday the hotel relocated me because they were overbooked? How is this possible?

I'm not usually one to write in, but I'm utterly baffled. After hours of research, I decided on the JW Marriott in New Orleans. I booked this back in April, got the confirmation # guaranteeing our room, flight from Seattl e and proceeded to plan for our trip. Just yesterday I got an e-mail from the Hotel Booking Manager that my reservation was cancelled because they were overbooked. They relocated me to a different hotel, and offered to comp the first night's stay. The room is not even close to comparable to what I had at the JW, and I am supposed to pay that same rate for the other nights. Is this legal?

(For each location tag, you will be guided through a 3-step process to add (1) a city and a state or a city and a country, (2) a Marriott brand, and (3) a Marriott hotel.)
