Making a trip out to Vegas next month and I've booked a room at the JW Marriott. Anyone have any recommendations for fun stuff near there? Also, I wasn't sure how close the wild fires were to this location...

Assuming you'll have a car while you are there.  We spent a few days at this property and its really great.  It has a casino and all the resort stuff you can expect but the location is pretty great.  There's plenty of great places to eat around the property, some great views of the golf course/red rock canyon and the staff was top notch.

    • Not sure how far you want to venture out, Red Rock Canyon is not a terribly far drive but totally worth it if you are into exploring National Parks.
    • The Vegas strip is always an attraction, parking can be interesting so perhaps doing a valet at one of the properties could work better than searching.  If you were to watch a show or do dinner at one of the places they might cover your valet costs.
    • We drove to Hoover Dam one evening and saw the sunset, which was pretty great.  We also decided randomly to just drive out to the Grand Canyon.  That was an adventure for a day trip and while a really long day, it was great fun.  We managed to see a lot of the canyon and decided to drive historic rt 66 on the way back.  You can also catch a helicopter tour out to the canyon, lots of options for that if you were looking at it.
    • If you are into guns, there's plenty of places to go shooting, including fully automatic stuff.  Certainly an experience if you are into guns.
    • There are all kinds of places to ride your bikes, atvs, off road toys if you have them or want to rent them.
    • Lots of the touristy stuff is closer to the strip area, including some amazing places to eat but cost can be inflated due to the location.
    • There's always golf, the course at the JW is nice.

We had a blast at the property when we were there.  Hope you have a great trip!

Thanks zukracer! Lots of good ideas! I may even tack on a few extra days to enjoy it more!

Good to know.  I've thought about staying here.  I've only stayed at 3 Marriott brand properties in Las Vegas:

--The Cosmopolitan - nice, upscale and spacious but expensive; for the money, I prefer Aria

--Renaissance Las Vegas Convention Center - very underrated hotel with nice rooms and a decent Club Lounge

--Courtyard Las Vegas Convention Center South - great staff but hotel smelled of smoke; they were doing a renovation at the time so it is probably better now

If haven't already gone, try the Irish Pub. They have a good beer selection and the burger is great. Also, the cable show Counting Kars bar is nearby.
