I am kicking myself for letting Marriott take advantage of me. I was cheated, plain and simple.
I have read that different members are offered different "challenges" at different times. My challenge was to achieve 6 stays by June 30. If I succeeded, I would maintain Gold status for an entire next year.
Given that our commitments keep us close to home, it was not easy, but I achieved 6 stays before the June 30 deadline. (Also, to be fair, these were not all single-night stays. Most were multiple-night stays. So Marriott certainly profitted from my business.)
The 6th stay -- the last one I needed to achieve the challenge -- ended June 30. That's when I checked out.
As you know, Marriott Rewards usually takes a couple of days to post stays to your account. So my stay ending June 30 was not posted until July 2.
To my surprise and disappointment, I was too late. The challenge was closed and I lost the opportunty to confirm Gold status.
To add insult to injury, I was immediately demoted to Silver status.
This is a clear case of bait-and-switch. The rules said I needed 6 stays by June 30. I did that. Apparently, the real requirement is to complete 6 stays and have them posted by June 30. Marriott Rewards never said that.
I feel like a fool for rushing to complete so many stays in a short period of time, and letting myself get cheated.
Next time I will know not to trust Marriott. This time, it was too late.
Has anyone else had the same experience? Surely I am not the only one who was cheated in this manner.
I would definitely try the phone call, and I'd be surprised if they didn't give it to you. They have been very responsive to people in the past over similar issues, and they really have nothing to gain from trying to keep you at a Silver Level. I would try a nice pleading approach, and not a "I deserve" approach (I'm not implying that is the way you've done it, just giving helpful tips), since I've found that it sometimes seems that some of these things are by interpretation of whoever you talk to. Also, if you don't get the answer you desire, I'd wait a few days and try to call again and see if you talk to someone else. Let us know what how you do
Thanks. This worked better than anything else I have tried, so thank you. I will need to call again because the problem was only half fixed, but it's a start.
The good news is that the person to whom I spoke quickly restored my Gold status. However, this particular promotion was for Gold status through February 2015, and that does not seem to have occurred. So I need to call back. Also, my last stay was bonused at the Silver rate (20%) not the Gold rate (25%) even though I was Gold throughout my last stay. So we are making progress, but there is more to do.
Glad to hear you're getting close. Hopefully you'll get the status to Feb 2015, because they usually give you the rest of the year you made it, and then a full year. The reasoning is usually that you are given a year to get the nights you need to show you should stay at Gold Status, and many times that's unreasonable in a partial year to make that.
Now it's almost all resolved. The bonus for the recent stay was recalculated at 25%, and I got an email from Brian H, Internet Correspondence Specialist, saying my Gold Status continues through Jan. 31, 2015. The only issue now is that nowhere on my Rewards profile do I see the expiry date. Is there someplace I should be looking? (I can rely on the email, if necessary, but would feel better if I saw the expiry date right there on my profile.)
It is not anywhere that I know of. It's just one of those things that's kind of fluid, and there really isn't a date in concrete, that I know of. They just usually reevaluate you every year around the end of january to middle of February. That's probably to let the stays from the end of the year, catch up and show on the books.
Check out the page I have linked at the bottom of this post, gwg. I used the Online Contact Form linked at the bottom of that first post and the response was amazing. Make sure you are signed into your Marriott Rewards account in another window or tab (vs Marriott Insiders account) before clicking on the link or it won't bring it up. Good luck.
