Growing up in New York City, I've always been asked by out of staters, "why are you a Yankee fan"? The very first thought that goes through their minds must be, o, you're a bandwagon fan, the Yankees win all the time so that is why you root for them. What I will concede is that although it was easier to cheer on a team that has won roughly 1 out of every 4 world series, ultimately I fell in love with the core team of the late 90s early 2000s. Tino Martinez, Scott Brosius, Mike Stanton, Jeff Nelson. Sure everyone loves Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams but that core team was mostly homegrown and even though the new look Yankees are a collection of old, overpaid free agents, I still think of the old gang when I respond to those out of staters, the Mets never had "Chuck Knoblauch."
