One of my early baseball memories as a young boy was going to my first professional baseball game with my father to see the Toronto Maple Leafs of the International League. We took the streetcar down to Maple Leaf Stadium. Prior to that game, my only connection with the team was listening to home games broadcast by Hal Kelly on CKEY radio. I got to see my hero Rockey Nelson in person that that day. Rockey went on to win the batting title that year (1957?).
Years after my father passed away and I came across the family scrpbook and I found out that he was quite a baseball player himself in the Toronto area. Only then did I realize how much that day must have also meant to my dad - taking his son to his first pro baseball game and passing on his love of the game. It worked ... today I am an avid Blue Jays fan.
