Marriott Points - just how much are they worth - an analysis - 2013

I thought everyone would enjoy an update to my original post at Marriott Points - just how much are they worth - an analysis

The original post was from an analysis done on 12/09/2010 (despite the date shown on the original post as Apr 28, 2012 5:07 PM). Below is a near copy/paste of the original post (different dates in blue):

Assumption: You want a hotel room in Illinois for 5 nights on the following dates: 2014-01-19 through 2014-01-23. Your choice is to:

* use points (category X points/night X 4 nights = total points needed as fifth night is free) -or-

* pay cash (rate/night X 5 nights)

* Taxes are not included in the calculations (potentially 10-15% more cash value for the points)

I created a spreadsheet for all 104 hotels in Illinois:

Some key items worth noting:

  1. Same number of hotels in Illinois between Jan 2011 & Jan 2014
  2. Venues: 5 fewer Cat 1, 2 fewer Cat 2; however 6 more Cat 3 and 3 never-before Cat 7
  3. The average cost per night over all categories will now set you back $39 more per night
  4. With the average cost per night up by >$39, a 5-night stay will now cost you >$195 over 2011
  5. Despite the category increases, points are actually worth MORE in 2014 as cash cost of rooms went up faster than point decreases!

    I can tell you that from the Marriott side, a hotel property pays Marriott International approximately $7.50 for 1,000 points to credit points into your account.  This relates to say the hotel giving a point bonus for whatever reason (promotion, bad experience, etc).  With that information, for example, you can determine that its approximately $187.50 equivalent value for a Category 5 hotel (25,000).  When determining when to use points vs when to just pay for the room, I create the calculation and make a decision, realizing that if I pay for the room I would earn additional points, etc.  I hope that makes sense.

      Plus, if you pay for the room you get an Elite Night credit.

      I also calculate it out per stay. I prefer to use my points on 5 night Vacation Packages and get max air miles.
