I was disappointed when AA left MR. Travel packages along with the Citi AA cards worked well to get us some great trips. After AA left, we turned to US Airways. That has worked well too. Star Alliance has gotten us all over the world. (I do miss AA one way award travel.) The pending merge will take a long time to accomplish. The new airline is slated to be AA. I am hoping we do not lose another MR partner, but we get AA back in the fold.
Looks like US will leave * Alliance for One World. Not good for us. AA will need to be brought back into the fold!
As part of the merger, US Airways will also leave the Star Alliance to join the oneworld global airline alliance, of which American Airlines is an anchor member along with British Airways, the people familiar with the matter said.
I do think it helps both airlines. Usair doesn't have the strong international routes and AA doesn't have the strong domestic routes to compete with delta or united. International is where airlines make their profits but they need a strong domestic network to get people to the international routes.
