Marriott time share versus Marriott hotel

Some friends would like to let me use their time share in Europe, but it's location is not convenient. I've asked them to reconsider and trade the time share for a Marriott hotel reservation, in another country. Is this possible?  How would one proceed?   Thx.

They would need turn the time share into Marriott reward points and then use the reward points to book a hotel. There are time limits on this conversion and if the time has passed all they can do is use the week.

Crystall, there are a couple ways your friends can go about this-  They can exchange outside of Marriott Vacation Club (MVC) for a different company's timeshare, or trade for Marriott Rewards Points (MRPs).  However, the time of year they have their timeshare may not coincide with a Marriott property's rewards availability.  Having MRPs gives your friends flexibility to stay in other properties outside of MVC, but there are restrictions- availability being first and foremost.  The exhange rate for MVC to MRP may not be as favorable as one may wish either- with different hotel tiers or categories that have varying points values per night.  However, if the hotel isn't a popular one, the further the points will go.  If you don't want to stay at the same time they have their timeshare, that is another advantage.  Having a full villa is one advantage of a timeshare that hotels don't offer though.

I just checked my MVC account and found out that this benefit- trading for MRPs, is somewhat different for different MVC owners.  Destinations club owners have pretty much unlimited ability to trade for MRPs, with certain deadlines.  For a weeks and enrolled owners it says

    Who's Eligible to Trade?

You're eligible to trade your timeshare ownership for Marriott Rewards points when:

    • You purchased your week directly from Marriott Vacation Club or from a
      Marriott-authorized broker.
    • Your name is listed on the deed of your vacation interest.
    • All of your Marriott Vacation Club accounts are current and you have no outstanding maintenance fees or loan payments due.
    • Your home resort's policy permits it. Most resorts allow you to trade for Marriott Rewards points every other year; some allow you to trade each year.

If you purchased your timeshare ownership week through a resale with a private party, you cannot trade it for Marriott Rewards points, but you can still earn Marriott Rewards points in other ways.

The trade of a timeshare week for points must be done by December 31 of the year prior to the year that is being traded. In other words... an election to get MR points for a 2013 timeshare week would have to be done by December 31, 2012.

    Hope this helps with clarification.

    Hi crystallographer,

The three responses you've received are correct (thanks for the detail, tomd68).

    Thanks,
