I tried to use my Platimum Elite status to book a room for Mid March in Austin Texas, during the SXSW convention (large, music/film convention). Reservations said that they "are not able to pull up any availability at that hotel, even when entering your Platinum Elite status". They didn't tell me that this was a blackout date for the hotel I was requesting, just that they couldn't do anything for me. She was able to tell me that the hotel currently "does have availability under the SXSW room block, but you will have to book that room directly with their website". I am not an SXSW badge holder, so I cannot do this (badges cost $600 or more).
Has anyone run into this issue and taken it to the next level? If so, please advise.
If a Platinum Elite member truly cannot "break in" to a hotel, just because there is a convention in town, then what's the use of having such a guarantee? I mean, in what other instance would you need such a guarantee - because of a wedding at the hotel? I can understand blackouts for the Superbowl, a G8 summit or the Olympics - but not for a convention?
Below are links for previous threads on this topic.
Please note which properties have not honored the 48 hr Platinum Guarantee and the explanation provided, and add the location tags.
Read through all the threads. My conclusion is that the "48-Hour Guaranteed Availability" should not be listed as a benefit to Platinum users. What are the limited dates? - list them in the terms and conditions - if they are limited, it won't take up much space. What event isn't special? What a huge back door this is form them to not honor the "Guaranteed Availability". Guaranteed is not a word to be used lightly when it comes to customer service. This clause is an extremely deceptive statement by Marriott. Translation of this benefit, when combined with the statement that is buried in the Terms and Conditions = We will find you a room, at the rack rate, unless the local hotel says they can't find you a room.
Guarantees with terms and conditions, by my definition, are not Guarantees.
i just used this benefit in Miami Beach for the BCS championship. My preferred hotel wasnt available- Eden Roc as they were soldout via BCS but they did override the Winter Haven and as it got closer to the date I got two rooms. I didnt care for the rooms at this Hotel- thin walls and could hear your neighbors talking plus i spoke with hotel several times prior to arrival and asked for the two rooms to be on the same floor and i was assured they could do that - traveling with teenagers- only to get rooms on separate floors.
if a convention has blocked all rooms and there is nothing available you can not expect them to move a convention booked room guest for you in my opinion. i have found that if you check right after the cutoff for the convention block and/or keep checking as date gets closer you can get a room. is there RI or CY in the area that are available?
