We chased the Northern Lights in Reykjavick, Iceland on 18 and 20th October, 2012. Both nights were clear and we saw the Northern Lights posted below. The were not as magnificent as the ones we saw in Tromso, Norway but still impressive!!! It was very lucky for us to see the Northern Lights on all six nights out (4 in Tromso, Norway and 2 in Reykjavick, Iceland.

Yes..it is tricky to take picture..I had to learn...The experts told me to use on my Nikon 3000:
1. Use Manual Settings
2. 800 - 1600 ISO
3. 15 - 20 Seconds
4. Infinity Focus - then a very slight return to the left
5. A tripod a must.
The better the lens the better pictures, of couse.
Another thing that I am doing is flying in around 2am. (I could arrive in the afternoon or in the night) I was told that some people were in Fairbanks for a period and didn't see them but on the plane leaving, once they climbed above the clouds, they saw them. If they are out that evening I should be able to see them on the way in. I will also be getting used to staying up till the wee hours of the morning. I just checked and breakfast ends at 9:30am.
Have you been to Alaska yet for the Northern Lights?
Was just wondering as the news today had pictures of the Northern Lights from Alaska today, because they said they were especially nice last nightt.
Did you see this news item?
I was in Alaska and did see the lights every night that I was there. Each night, they got just a little better. What I learned,is that the naked eye can only see white and a little green and maybe yellow. A camera lens can pick up the brilliant colors. I saw white with a slight green tint. jasper Did you see more brilliance than I did?
I am glad that I went and am still really tired.
I returned home on the 16th. I had seen an article that the 15th was supposed to be extra good.
I read an article that a Northern Light chaser had gone to Iceland for 5 nights and it was cloudy for the entire stay. They got to another location and did see them there but it had been cloudy for 3 weeks before they got there.
You never know what you will see.
What a neat Northern-Lights-Chasing trip you've had. You have some of the most fun trips. I really wish we had the time (and more importantly the money ) to take half of your wonderful trips. Keep traveling and sharing Jasper. When we get to take the trips we do take, you are a library of reference. We love it!
What a wonderful experience!! Very nice pictures!
Did they have the full festival like they do in Russia? We went through St. Petersburg as they were setting up for the festival and later got to watch part of it on televison while we were far away in Siberia... Unfortunately, we were busy dealing with a new culture and never even thought to take the camera out...could kick myself now.
