Best Places to Visit When School Starts?

painedplatinum Platinum 2 Reviews

What are great places to visit the week or two after kids go back to school? The first few weeks of September are still officially summer, but many places start dropping off after Labor Day. Are there vacation locales that you enjoy the week after the crowds die down?

I'll offer up a 3 hour drive from home for the pained one's family. We enjoy Ocean City, Maryland. There are many businesses that close their doors after labor day weekend, but the best ones stay open. The beautiful beaches and boardwalk are second to none in the Mid-Atlantic. The town itself has made a point of featuring it's convention center to draw beach lovers out year round. These next few weeks will be great. The only Marriott property, the Courtyard, has been much more reasonable with off season rates.

What are your favorites both near and far?

Ok, I want a do-over, as my wife says.  I'll say, Lincoln, Ne, Memorial Stadium, Tom Osborne Field, 50 yard line, lower level between row 10 and 20.  Must bring or purchase your own red balloons!

In the north...Nantucket, because the rates at properties drop (White Elephant, the most expensive premier property on Nantucket) from $1000/night to less than $200. Anyplace on Cape Cod is the same. Its a ghost town after Labor Day.

In the south (the Florida panhandle area) rates drop at the end of August because for some strange reason, the kiddos go back to school late August.......but temps are still 80's and the gulf water is w-a-r-m!

Santa Rosa Beach, FL (my hometown):

I've only been to the Cape Cod area for business..during the day. We have it on our list, along with Nantucket, and I hope we get there sooner rather than later.

When I lived in New England, I always waited till the fall to go to Cape Code, as the traffic going/returning is horrible till after labor day. We also use to go for Columbus Day weekend, as this is when most of the shops on Cape Code close for the season, especially P-town, so everything is on sale!

If you do go, stop in at Sparks to shop.  You can have alot of fun without spending too much money.

I just returned from a great time at Virginia Beach (Fairfield, right on the ocean - all rooms oceanfront). Terrific rates, no crowds, great weather, quick elevators, uncrowded workout rooms, first round draft picks at breakfast etc. All the excellent restaurants that are 45 minute waits in season were available and thrilled to have us, even the boardwalk was great for bike riding and walking. The Fairfield is starting to show some wear and tear (but the staff is excellent), so next year it will be the newer Springhill or Residence Inn (both oceanfronts also). Ocean City is great also, used to do it in the 90s (when I lived in Philly area), but I've gotten spoiled with breakfast being included.

I agree, Virginia Beach. We used to go there every mid September until my son started first grade........its almost empty then but the weather is still so nice, if you can steer away from a hurricane! Got trapped in Ivan on the way home one year!

Also, Niagara Falls is great this time of year as well. Although it always has a crowd, its so much less in Spetember, and the weather is still good.....the Courtyard and Fallsview are both wonderful properties. Take a drive through Niagara on the Lake as well.

Its great to see how the falls look in each of the seasons, especially with less tourists.

p.s. If you have a week, you could combine Cape Code and NH/VT as its about 3 hr in between and a nice drive in the fall.  Or you could drive to the MA-NH-Maine seacoast as its only 45 minutes to the east. and alot more things to do

      • Marble Head, Mass - quaint, lots of artists, was used in The proposal to look like Sitka Alasak
      • Newburyport, Mass - best whale watch boat with scientific equipment, harbor sight seeing cruises - especially nice for sunset
      • Portsmouth, NH - Historic Wentworth by the sea, nice harbor sightseeing cruises, music hall, reprertory theater, artsy shopping
      • NH Liquor Control at the NH/Maine Border on I-95 is one of the best stocked liquor controls in NH, and prices and selection are sometimes less than duty free
      • Kittery, ME - great outlet shopping,
      • Ogunquit, ME - Cliff House Sunday Brunch, the play house, cliff walk

If I were doing the MA/NH/ME seacoast I would start in Beverly through Marblehead/Gloucester/Newburyport through Rockport, Massachusetts to NH and on to Rockport/Camden, Maine. The stunning views and seacoast stopping points are magnificent!

Actually the Residence Inn in North Conway is the closest hotel to this area.  The Town Place Suites in Gilford is a bit far south.  We loved the location.  It was central to everything we wanted to do in the area.  And we typically travel there after Columbus Day weekend.  The rate drop significantly as does the traffic.  And a lot of the shops are still open.

I am not sure just where you live but expect that you are not interested in places like Montery which is great at that time of year.  Maybe Ashville NC would suit you.  Williamsburg another.

Shenandoah National Park, VA, maybe Monticello in Charlottesville

Any place that's really popular in the summer, just about.  I like Savannah, GA after summer; Charleston, SC; Hilton Head, SC; St. Augustine, FL; Monterey, CA; Yellowstone Nat'l Park; Stone Mtn., GA; Highlands, NC; Blowing Rock, NC; Gatlinburg, TN; Helen, GA; San Francisco, CA (all year); Charlestown, MO; Hannibal, MO; San Antonio, TX; New Braunfels, TX; the Corn Palace, Mitchell, SD (before the birds eat it for the year); Chattanooga, TN; Branson, MO; Emerald Isle, NC.

BTW:  I love the CY in Charleston, SC.  Right across the Ashley River is a castle looking building that's a restaurant called California Dreaming, which is part of a chain.

The HL Hunley Submarine was discovered over 135 years later with the help of modern technology. It has since been raised and is in the process of conservation in a 90,000-gallon tank at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center on the grounds of the former US Navy Base. The crew was ceremoniously buried at Charleston's Magnolia Cemetery. Visitors can view the actual submarine, artifacts and documentaries. There is a small gift shop.

I edited it a bit because I had SF, CA in twice, so I just added Monterey, CA because of the aquarium.  A couple of other places would be the Grand Canyon, AZ; Monument Nat'l Park, UT; and Santa Fe, NM.  Just SO many places, aren't there?

Back in 2005, my husband was working onsite at Montgomery, AL for the same system that he's now on.  He had a rental car with unlimited mileage and we were visiting his family in northern MO with the plans to go to a family reunion near ST. Louis, MO.  Both of his brothers had just gone to Yellowstone Nat'l Park on separate trips and both had raved about it.  Well, not exactly.  One of the brothers complained about the bumper to bumper traffic in Yellowstone.

Our son and I lacked 5 states being in the 48 contiguous states and my husband lacked 7.  We decided to go to those states instead of the reunion.  The rental was a new La Sabre and it got 31 mpg at a time when gas prices were hitting $3 for the first time.  The states we lacked were the 5 plains states and then UT and NV for my husband.

I found a parking place right in front of the lodge by Old Faithful and I went shopping at the gift shop while Larry and Brian found places by Old Faithful.  I bought close-out souvenirs and then went to the cafeteria to get a salad.  Ate it and sat down in a big, leather chair inside the main lodge room to watch OF.

One of the rest areas in SD had a roadside museum rest area that told us about the really swift animals that look like antelope called pronghorn.  They are so pretty.  There was a buffalo there that some German boys were walking up to.  I really was afraid of what might happen so I told the park ranger about it and she watched out for them.  We drove through the Lewis and Clark highway towards Pierre, ND.  Starting with 1/4 tank of gas, I thought we would find a station.  There were no gas stations through about 50 miles or so at least of nothing but rolling hills.  The gas signaled empty and there was no sign of a station or a town.  I was really getting worried but there was nothing to do but keep on driving and look for gas pumps on the farms.  None were visible.  Finally, Pierre was in the distance over the mountain and the river.  I coasted into the first station we came to.

After spending 3 days in SD on our trip, and seeing the corn palace, the Badlands and Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Wall, SD and Wall Drugstore; we headed towards ND.

In SD en route to ND,  there was a motel there that we stayed at that looked like a fort.  We were hungry, so we stopped at the restaurant and while Larry and Brian were eating, I asked about the rooms in the fort.  I rented a room without telling them and left them there while I went next door to check the room out to be sure.

On Sept 11 while driving through MT, the snow had already started falling and was on the ground in the high mountains, which I think most of it was.  There were some of the steepest roads going through those mountains I’d ever seen.  I thought NC was bad, although the Rockies are the worst.

Drove through the Grand Tetons.  Beautiful.  Stopped at a few sites.

Saw a prairie dog town somewhere, probably in the Dakotas.

Drove into WY and ID.  ID was night driving.  There was a fire in there somewhere and a car came up on me really fast in all that smoke.  He had to slow down, and then shortly, there was a tilling tractor coming towards us on the other side.  I think they’d been helping with the fire, but there were no lights on the tiller and the rotor blades were down.  If that car had passed us, the passengers wouldn’t have had a chance.  They slowed down after that.  He realized how close he’d come to disaster, assuming it was a guy.

In Utah, there were all kinds of national parks.  We saw a couple, including Monument Valley.

Went to Four Corners, NM; which is a NM address for an Indian trading market that you pay $5 to get into, but they have really good buys on Indian jewelry and in the center is a concrete area that’s marked off with the borders of the different states you’re in when you cross the bisecting lines.  NM, UT, CO and AZ.
