I went here iwht my family about 2 years ago, and it was the best family vacation ever. Was platinumn back then as well. The place is gorgeous, in a great loacation, and has excursions, as well as onsite activities. It also contains a small casino. We had so much fun here. The area around the hotel is safe, as it is surrounded by a private townhouse community on one side and the ocean on the other side. We did zip lining, kayaking, snorkeling and the rain forest. We did not venture out of the hotel for restaurants, except while on excursions, so I don't have an recommendations. But the staff is great. They have like 8 different inter-locking pools. Also, maybe 2 or 3 restaurants. A beautiful place to go! I would defintely go back in an instant.
We had a great stay there last year. It is so beautiful. They have an onsite service to plan excursions. We did zip line, the volucano/rain forest trip, we went horseback riding in the rainforest and swam in a waterfall/river. we also went jet skiing on property. there is a marina that the hotel has a path to to walk to ( about a quarter- half mile) or a bus that goes back and forth free to that have about 4-6 restaraunts, shops, grocery, and bakery that we went to most nights they also had some local entertainment great place. as far a platinum perks we did get upgraded to ocean view. it was the best vacation ever.
Just a short update. I just completed a stay at the property. It is amazing. The staff was extremely helpful. Everything was very clean and I felt safe the entire time. The pool is one of the nicest I have ever been to. The breakfast is expensive but had a wide range and was excellent. I would recommend to everyone if they want to visit Costa Rica and stay on the coast this is an awesome property. Everything you need is right there. Going on day trips to experience the area makes returning that much more pleasant. Did not use their travel services arranged for everything off the net and it all worked including transportation to and from San Jose. Jaco is a neat place to visit and shop and surf but we were happy to go back to Los Suenos to feel safe and clean.
This is about a 90 minute ride from San Juan airport. Take the hotel's shuttle, and don't rent a car, as the highway system is still being developed. When I was there, I met a guy from Houston, who rented a car with a GPS, and still got lost! I would not spend anything lsess than a week there, as there is som uch to see and do!
We were there in June with our two kids (12 & 15), had a GREAT time! the place is very nice and the staff very friendly. We are platinum members and used points for our stay and got upgraded to ocean view. We rented a car (SUV 4x4) and didn't have any problems I would highly recommend renting one the roads are not bad (we downloaded the Costa Rican map to our GPS before we left and worked great) it just made it easy to get around. We drove to Manuel Antonio, it was save and a fun place to go with lots of monkeys. The food at the hotel is pricey, we went to a restaurant right out side our hotel (can't remember the name but if you go out the main road take a right this friendly "local" restaurant is on your left - Great place for lunch! and down that same road towards the beach on the left there's a great seafood restaurant with amazing sunsets. BTW, before getting to Los Suenos we stayed in Arenal (Los Lagos Hotel, not a Marriott but great hotel) for 2 days to see the volcano, waterfalls and hanging bridges. We drove from San Jose to Arenal to Los Suenos and back to San Jose with NO problem! Great vacation, can't wait to go back.
We just stayed there in June and it was one of our favorite vacations!! We are a family of five and booked one room with points and one room with the all-inclusive plan which covers 2 adults and 2 kids (for a small daily surcharge). I had contacted the manager's assistant prior to arrival to try and guarantee connecting rooms (as we have platinum status). She could not have been nicer and even upgraded us to oceanfront suite (as there was availability). The staff was absolutely amazing. The dining service staff knew our children's names after the first meal and greeted them every morning by name! My children are still talking about Rodrigo. It was fabulous using the plan and well worth the money. Tips are included in the plan but we always paid a little extra which was extremely appreciated (and deserved).
The hotel is very protected so some might feel they don't get the full "Costa Rica" experience. We stayed in Manuel Antonio a couple days before and took excursions from the hotel so feel like we saw plenty! I would not recommend using the tour company in the hotel. They were pricey and not very friendly. We used outside companies and were delighted. We took the boat right outside the hotel (booked it on the beach and paid half) to Tortuga Island. River rafting is not to be missed and we highly recommend Rafiki Safari Lodge for it - it is like Fantasy Island!
The beach at the hotel is not nice but the pools more than make up for it. Surfing at Jaco was a nice outing and only a cheap taxi ride away.
We were originally going to rent a car but decided to hire a driver instead. It was the best decision. The driver was more like a tour guide and taught us so much. It was also really nice to just land and be totally taken care of after a long flight. The roads are not as bad as they sound but one part is narrow and there was a huge downpour on the way to the hotel. I was happy my husband did not have to concentrate and could enjoy the scenery.
You can not go wrong with Los Suenos!
I am Platinum Premier Elite an had 3 rooms on points for 5 days. 360k points plus $60 per day per room for ocean view.. You will get free internet, and I took a plate of cheese and a 1/2 bottle of wine for my Platinum gift. There is not a Concierge Lounge nor breakfast buffet. I kinda expected to get my $60 per day room comped and pay for the other two, but no. Don't make local phone calls and especially long distance. I have no problems with the service at the hotel, it is great even though as normal things there are pricey. There is nothing around the hotel other than the Marina and Golf course, a short taxi ride to town. If you don't rent a car hook up with a taxi driver in town, much cheaper than going thru the hotel. Like mwescott says above go into Jaco and make any reservations for all activities, it's much cheaper. There is a little Italian restaurant in town call Eats, really really good, and Hildago on the beach in Jaco. Make sure to order the bananna desert and video it. Go to Villa Caletas hotel for lunch and have a couple of drinks, really high end place with beautiful views 1400 ft. about the Pacific. 7km north of the hotel.
It is like a banana foster dessert. They turn the lights off in the restaurant and light I guess about a pint of rum and in a dish and hold it over thier head and pour it back and forth several time finally eneding up blazing on again in the final plate with the dessert. We all had already ordered dessert and finished, but ordered another so my kids could video and post to facebook. After we did it first that night they went around to almost every table for the same show. Simple, but pretty neat looking and a good presentation.
It has been a few years, but our family has stayed at Los Suenos and really enjoyed it. We took a few day trips from the resort and were very happy with all the options in the area. We also really enjoyed in the wildlife. My husband really enjoyed the golf. We thought the prices were reasonable compared to Cancun or Hawaii. The only real challenge for us traveling from Utah was to find a flight that got us there at a reasonable time and thus had to spend one night in San Jose before heading down to Los Suenos. We wrote about it on our family's blog: Los Suenos Resort
