With its shiny skyscrapers and modern aesthetic, Shanghai could easily be the future that Disney’s Tomorrowland celebrates. As China’s largest metropolis continues to stretch upward, getting a good view is key, whether you’re taking in 19th-century buildings and Pudong’s modern skyline from The Bund; journeying underwater with the resident wildlife of the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium; peaking in the windows of shops lining Nanjing Road; taking in the view from the observation deck of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower; getting a glimpse into the past at the Shanghai History Museum or enjoying a rooftop coffee or cocktail. And thanks to what one Insiders member calls “an excellent transportation system that makes it easy to get anywhere in the city in a short time,” you can hit all the major attractions (and even those off the beaten track).
Deciding where to stay in Shanghai will depend on the purpose of your visit, but the Insiders community has a few recommendations. At the JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai at Tomorrow Square, you’ll find yourself high above the city (the lobby is on the 32nd floor) and within walking distance of shopping, dining, attractions and nightlife. Vegasguy considers the hotel his “home away from home,” praising the friendly and attentive management, efficient service and breakfast buffet. The guestrooms “command the best views of the city that you can hope to find,” he says.
Cdn_abroad offers a detailed account on the Shanghai Marriott Hotel City Centre, which offers a central location, a lounge with great views and an attentive and friendly staff. “I was so impressed from the start of my visit…I would stay here again in a heartbeat.” If you’re trying to decide between staying in the newer or older part of the city, Marriott offers the Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel and the Renaissance Shanghai Yu Garden Hotel; the former, according to one Insider, is in a beautiful location and closer to the airport, while the latter, in the old part of town, puts you in the middle of everything you’d want to experience.
