That's a good question. In the past, there seemed to be a strategy by Marriott to offer attainable Mega bonus, Summer Bonus, etc. It was thought, their computers would look at your stay history and offer a program that you could reach with a stretch, and deliver additional room nights and revenue for Marriott.
This Summer Bonus for 2012 does not seem to have followed that logic. My case, for example... I stay a lot, over 100 nights per year. I've always been offered the stay 20 nights get 35,000 pts and then stay an additional 5 nights (total 25) and max 50,000 pts. It worked well for me and Marriott. I made sure to hit the targets. If not offered, I wouldn't have stayed in Marriott properties as much. We both won.
This time, they offered a stay 6 nights at different properties and get 3 free nights, cat 1-4. This didn't make sense to me, but this is what was offered. I've read other folks, like you, who are confused as to the Corporate strategy this summer, also.
This year I am offered 20,000 for 15 nights. 20,000 is what 1 night in a cat 4 hotel would cost. On MI, a person was offered 5,000 for a weekend stay. Searching the web, some are offered a cat 1-4 cert for every 2 stays, another the same except 3 stays. I forgot the last. So others can stay twice and get almost what I get for 15 nights.
I already have 67 nights this year.A few years back, when Marriott quit offering AA miles, they had a hudge Delta promotion, After one stay, for every stay I got 5,000 Delta miles to some max, I ended up with over 60,000 DM. I don't remember last year.
That's the rub. Any promo should be attainable or it falls flat for both parties.
As far as value goes...I think that's in the eye of the beholder. I prefer the large pile of points versus the free night certificates. Because I stay a lot, I build up tons of points. By adding points for the bonus, I feel it gives me maximum flexibility for usage. I like to use my points in the buy 4 nights get the 5th free mode. This may cost 80,000-140,000 points, depending on the cat. of the hotel. If I stay 25 night during a promo period...from the stays alone I can generate around 60,000 pts ($150/nt plus 50% Plat bonus plus Arrival gift). When they offer me an additional 50,000 thru MegaBonus, that 60,000 turns into 110,000...enough for a nice vacation.
My daughter is a Silver, she prefers the free night certs simply because she doesn't stay enough to max the bigger bonus's. A free night here or there for her is exactly what she's looking for at this time in her life.
We think in a like manor. I almost never take an award for a single night. I go for the package. I do like to get the free nights and if I get them, I might have an airport stay before or after a trip, etc. Example: if I am traveling to the east coast, I get there late and an airport stay is nice allowing me to start early the next morning.
Within the last year I have twice communicated with Marriott Rewards customer service (via email) to change from the promotion offered me to another option. Last year, I asked to be changed from the '2 stays, 1 free night' to the '20 nights 25,000 pts, 25 nights 40,000 pts' (I can't remember exactly the amount of pts) and this Spring, I asked to be changed from the 20+ nights, *** points to the '2 stays, 1 free night, max 2 free nights' option since I knew I wouldn't be traveling as much during that time frame. Both times I was changed without difficulty. And this was all accomplished simply via email. I learned about these other promotions from this very site, so thanks to those of you who have mentioned them!
yes I know. When there was talk on this forum about a month back of a 10k bonus for staying at CY's and I didn;t get it, I called up Customer Service. They said that because I predominantly stay at CY's I wasn't targetted. They want the people who don't usually frequent the CY's.. Which makes perfect sense to me from a marketing perspective.
Thanks so much for posting these links, especially the second one. I just called up Platinum Customer Service and switched to the 25 nights stayed resulting in 40k points. It's interesting that my Summer Bonus had to do with weekend stays, and would result in far less points earned. Platinum Customer Service was very accommodating. Without this forum I would have no knowledge of these promotions.
We were assigned the same promo as you and asked to switch to the 40,000; which they said they will adjust after the promo ends. So it worried me when the first 5,000 pts. were added after our 1st weekend stay in Dallas this past weekend. When I called CS, they said they will adjust to the remaining 40,000 pts. in Aug., so we won't have to worry about accruing pts. in the meantime. Just to let you know not to worry about what's going on.
I keep reading that everyone is getting different promotions for the summer bonus, but I don't seemed to have been offered any of them. My promotion central say no updates, and when I click to register for the summer bonus on the home page is "We’re sorry, but there was an error in directing you to this promotion." I saw that someone had this issue when they were earning miles but I am a points earner (and have always been). Has this happened to anyone else? I am traveling 100% for work right now so I'll have lots of stays this summer and don't want to miss out.
I would suggest that you call the rewards number. I preferred a different promotion and they changed it for me. After reading about the many offered, I called again and they put me down for others. I need to call back at the end and they will give me what I earned but if the original one I enrolled in had given me points, they would take those. It appears that we can double dip on some but not all. I will go for it and see how I do. Hope you are successful. Report back so we all will know.
I was offered a lot of points for 15 nights and more if I stayed more. I also qualified for a free nt after 2 stays, a 2nd after 2 more and a 3rd for 2 more. I had to choole between these.
I was also eligable for a FF one for 5000 for 2 stays and a CY one giving 2500 for a weekend nt and another 2500 for a second. These can be combined with the first and therefore double dip.
If you would prefer to choose, vote and who knows, they might just let us do so.
This is the Summer Bonus Promo that I had until I switched to the 40K points for 25 nights promo:
Your weekend stays at any participating Marriott® hotel worldwide can earn up to 15,000 bonus points with Marriott Rewards® Summer Bonus. With the world’s most distinctive array of hotel brands, you’re always on the road to something amazing.
Any. Just 2 stays. The free nights are good for 1 year. I like these free nights to stay at airport hotels before or after a flight. I get more sleep this way. One free night at LAX saves more than $100. I am using my CC for LHR Marriott and that will save me over $200. I do like points too.
I had the exact same issue, no summer promo offered. So yesterday I called Rewards and asked why? The Rewards rep did not know why it was not showing up for me and had no explanation, she said it was the first she has heard that anyone was not offered the option to signup. She was happy enough to sign me up for the promotion, I indicated which one I wanted. Today I can see that I am registered.
