Frankfurt - Marriott vs Westin

Looks like I have a 2 week stay coming up in Frankfurt next month and I was wondering if anyone had stayed at both the Marriott and the Westin and could compare.

Here are my random thoughts so far:

As I've said previously, I'm thinking I'll mostly stay SPG this year because I'm not worried about Lifetime status, I'll get more points for the SPG stays, and I'll renew my status in 1/3 the number of nights.

Looking on SPG my initial thought was that Le Meridien looks really cool from the outside, but then I saw on FlyerTalk that they do not have a lounge.

So then I looked at the Westin, which may be a better location for me anyway (it's physically closer, and I THINK it's pretty much on a direct tram route, but I need to double check). But, here's where my pet peeve for SPG kicks in. I pick a room level and there are 7 different sub-options each of which has multiple rate options (up to 13!). It's so annoying that I had to count and there were 56 different options for the base room type!!! The other part that I find annoying is that so many of them are pre-paid or otherwise not changeable.

That is one thing I like much better on traditional Marriott so I checked the Marriott there and it looks nice also. FlyerTalk reports the lounge is closed on weekends, but you can take a full breakfast in the restaurant then. I'm also considering going to the Heidelberg Marriott for the weekend, so the weekend lounge difference might be a moot point. The refundable rates at the Marriott are within my per diem whereas I'd probably have to prepay at the Westin or take a lower level room and hope for an upgrade.

Speaking of upgrades, anyone stay at both and able to comment on likelihood of Platinum upgrade?

Both brands currently have 2x points deals so both would be very good, but I'd get more SPG points and they are more valuable so that makes me lean towards SPG in addition to the quicker status renewal.

OK, I think that completes my thought dump. I'll probably go ahead and book the Marriott refundable rate just to hold a room and might switch to the Westin before the trip. (Heck I could even split my trip between them with 1 week at each, but that would work against my status renewal strategy).

Hi 7, I can't be of much help with your original questions, but would like to encourage you towards that weekend in Heidelberg.  Great Marriott property on the Neckar River and Heidelberg is a great town.  I hope you will also be able to get up to the castle while you're there.

Also and as I'm sure you know, often the restaurant breakfasts are far superior to lounge brekkies.

    Hey there,

Yes I stayed many times at Marriott Frankfurt before. It is my home city as well where I was born.

I know the SPG Platinum treatment at Westin is good but usually they never upgrade to suites. They are often quite fool. Marriott is a much bitter hotel with more rooms available then Westin.

I always got at the Marriott a Suite at Check inn but never pre upgraded. You need to ask there when you go there if they have suites available and if yes they will give it to you. Problem is during the week they are quite full friday to monday they always have suites for upgrades available. The Executive Lounge at the Marriott Frankfurt is one of the highest one in Europe. Only downside is closed from Friday afternoon till Sunday late afternoon. Food and Service is really good at the Marriott.

I didn't like Marriott Frankfurt not that much but they got better year by year and they have now a very nice Duty Manager Mrs. Olboeter which one is very kind and helpful .

    Go for the Marriott!

Westin is great I heard but I would prefer Marriott. Only good thing about the Westin is they have a pool! But Marriott got a fantastic gym. You will meet Singapore Airlines as well in the Marriott!

Well, it looks like due to crazy government regulations I will be staying at the Marriott after all.

I'm glad that I booked the rooms when I did as I did a search now and it is showing no availability.

Unfortunately, I left the weekend out so I e-mailed them to see if they could just make one of the reservations for the entire two week period and then cancel the other. This should be possible as the same class of room is available that weekend so hopefully they will make it happen.
