Marriott Hotel Review

Nice hotel, great service, terrible concierge lounge food selection

Reviewed on Jul 14, 2013 by xtinarenee

I’m a Marriott Reward’s Gold Elite Member and I’ve been staying at Marriott Hotels on a regular basis for work and pleasure since 1993. I appreciate the quality and service of the Marriott chain of hotels. However, on a recently stay at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina July 7th-July 12, 2013, I was extremely disappointed in the selection of food at the concierge lounge, it was absurd. I really appreciated the service at the hotel and the fact that they upgraded me to an Executive Suite. The main reason why I chose this hotel was because of the location of the hotel, in relation to the San Diego Convention Center, and the concierge lounge. I expected to have a nice selection of food for a “Marriott Marquis” hotel.  I really like enjoying the concierge lounge and partaking in a nice array of hors d'oeuvre and breakfast. However, this lounge, while beautiful with the nice views overlooking the marina, had offerings that were minimal and of poor quality. I’ve had better free breakfasts and appetizers at a Homewood Suites, Residence Inn, or Hampton Inn. All of which don’t require an “Elite Status”. I saw other members, just like myself, walking in and then immediately walking out with disappointment on their faces. One night there were meatballs and two different types of cheeses that weren’t that great. That was basically it. No fruit, veggies, or other hot appetizers. Not even bottled water that you can take back to your room. One night, they had chicken strips along with the two cheeses, again, abysmal. After the second night, I gave up and never returned. For breakfast it was basically a continental with horrible scrambled eggs and no meat selections and the fresh fruit selection was about half ripe.  I felt insulted, again this is not what I’m accustomed to with the other Marriott concierge lounges, and they usually have a much larger selection of breakfast & appetizers options. I really feel bad for those people that paid extra for this. I’ve stayed at other Marriott’s where the concierge lounge was much better than this one. The concierge lounge at the San Diego Marriott & Marquis & Marina was the worst I’ve ever experienced. I complained at the front desk and they were not surprised and informed me that MANY other people were complaining, as well. They told me that the changes in the reductions in the selection of items came from corporate and to complain to them about it.

However, overall, it’s seems that most concierges lounges have been going downhill in the past several years. It just seems that the concierge lounges from hotel to hotel is really inconsistent and you would think that Marriott Corporate would raise the bar a little, especially since a big part of the reason for this lounge is for it’s frequent travelers that spend a lot of money at their hotels.

With that being said, the rooms were nice, Marina Kitchen food was excellent...the bar tenders were fabulous. The pool was awesome and basically the service everywhere was excellent!!! All this helped make up for the concierge lounge issues. Parking @ $28/$40 is too high, though!
